Component of laundry detergent: Together with surfactants, one of the two main ingredients in washing detergents. Builders bind the calcium and magnesium ions and prevent mineral deposits on the laundry and washing machine parts. Most modern laundry detergents no longer contain phosphates. Instead zeolites (synthetic sodium aluminum silicates) are used.
