Infections which are a result of a stay in a hospital or a healthcare service unit, but unconnected to the patient's original illness. Infections are considered nosocomial if they first appear 48 hours or more after hospital admission or within 30 days after discharge. The frequency of nosocomial infection has not decreased despite advances in medicine. A clearly defined hygiene plan and efficient cleaning methods reduce risk.
